Çatışmalar

The FN SCAR SSR is a semi-automatic 7.62x51mm NATO designated marksman rifle built by FN Herstal for United States Special Operations Command. In US service it carries the formal designation Mk 20 Mod 0 Sniper Support Rifle, and most operators and collectors simply call it the Mk 20. The "SSR" in the name states its job plainly. It is meant to sit beside a bolt-action sniper rifle in a two-person team and put fast, accurate semi-automatic fire on targets the bolt gun's slower cycle time cannot keep up with.1

Güçlü yönler
  • Semi-auto follow-up shots faster than a bolt-action DMR
  • 60 percent parts commonality with the in-service Mk 17 SCAR-H
  • Adjustable cheekpiece and length of pull without tools
  • Quick-detach suppressor mount built into the barrel
Zayıf yönler
  • Semi-automatic only, no select-fire option
  • Heavier than a dedicated bolt-action sniper rifle
  • 7.62x51mm NATO caps practical range well short of magnum sniper cartridges
  • SOCOM has already begun shifting DMR-role budget toward newer 6.5mm Creedmoor platforms

The Mk 20 is not a new design from the ground up. It is an accurized derivative of the Mk 17 SCAR-H, the 7.62mm rifle that FN Herstal built to win the US Special Operations Forces Combat Assault Rifle competition of 2004. FN Herstal is a Belgian firearms maker founded in 1889, and it is FN's American subsidiary, FN America, that actually manufactures the Mk 20 for SOCOM at a factory in Columbia, South Carolina, rather than at the parent company's Herstal plant in Belgium.2 That production split, a Belgian-designed weapon system built on US soil for a US military customer, is one of the more overlooked facts about the rifle, and it explains why the weapon is catalogued here under US manufacture rather than Belgian.

The Mk 20 shares its receiver, trigger group logic, and short-stroke gas piston with the Mk 17, but nearly everything aimed at accuracy was reworked. FN Herstal fitted a longer monolithic aluminum receiver with more rail space for night vision and thermal sights stacked with a day optic, a stiffened barrel extension and profile meant to reduce barrel whip, and a fixed, non-folding precision stock with a tool-free adjustable cheekpiece and length of pull.3 The rifle belongs to the wider family of DMR systems, weapons built to extend a rifle squad's or special-operations team's reach past the effective range of a standard-issue carbine without going all the way to a dedicated bolt-action sniper rifle.

The FN SCAR SSR's specifications answer most of the common questions people search for around this rifle. It weighs approximately 4.85 kg (10.69 lb) unloaded per FN's own published specification, runs a 20 inch (508mm) barrel, and feeds from a 20-round detachable box magazine (a 10-round option also exists for compact carry).4 Muzzle velocity with standard 7.62mm ball ammunition runs around 710 m/s. FN's own literature rates the SSR's effective range at 1,000 meters against a point target, while some independent technical references are more conservative and cite roughly 600 meters as a realistic effective range for a shooter using standard-issue ammunition rather than match-grade loads, a gap worth knowing about before taking either figure as the final word.4,3

An Accurized SCAR-H, Not a Clean-Sheet Rifle

The FN SCAR SSR's design starts from the same short-stroke gas piston system and rotating bolt as the Mk 17 SCAR-H, and FN Herstal states the two rifles share about 60 percent parts commonality.3 That commonality kept training, armorer support, and spare parts logistics simple for units that already fielded the Mk 17 alongside it. The gas-operated piston system sits above the barrel rather than tapping gas directly into the bolt carrier, which keeps combustion fouling away from the action and was one of the selling points of the whole SCAR family during the 2004 SOCOM trials.

Where the Mk 20 diverges from the Mk 17 is everything downstream of reliability. The receiver was lengthened to add rail space, the barrel extension and profile were strengthened to cut down on barrel deflection under sustained fire, and the trigger was replaced with a modular unit that can be configured for single-stage or two-stage operation depending on the shooter's preference.3 The stock is fixed rather than folding, a deliberate trade against the Mk 17's folding stock, because a folding hinge introduces play that a precision rifle cannot tolerate. FN's cold hammer-forged, chrome-lined barrel is built for the accuracy demanded of the role, and the rifle carries MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rail at the 3, 6, 9, and 12 o'clock positions around the forend for lights, lasers, and bipods.4

The rifle keeps the detachable-magazine feed and ambidextrous controls of the wider SCAR line, and it is suppressor-ready from the factory with a barrel built to mount a quick-detach suppressor, commonly paired in service with Knight's Armament Company's QDC muzzle device to cut sound and flash signature for a two-man team trying to stay unseen after a shot.3 It is not fitted with an under-barrel grenade launcher mount and carries no integral bipod as issued, both a deliberate difference from the assault-rifle-role Mk 17 and Mk 16 SCAR-L, which reflects how narrowly the design was built around the precision-fire mission rather than general infantry use.

▣Çalışma Sistemi5MOD.5

The FN SCAR SSR's caliber choice, standard 7.62x51mm NATO, keeps logistics simple for a two-man team that may already be carrying the same ammunition for a bolt-action sniper rifle, but it also puts a practical ceiling on the FN SCAR SSR's maximum useful range compared to magnum sniper cartridges like .300 Winchester Magnum. That tradeoff, more ammunition compatibility for less outright reach, is central to why SOCOM later moved toward a 6.5mm Creedmoor replacement, discussed below.

The 2004 SCAR Competition

The Mk 20's story begins with the broader Special Operations Forces Combat Assault Rifle program. In January 2004, United States Special Operations Command issued a worldwide solicitation for a modular rifle family to eventually replace the M4A1 carbine in special-operations service. Nine vendors submitted twelve prototype designs, including entries from FN Herstal and Heckler and Koch, evaluated on modularity, reliability, and the ability to switch between calibers.5 FN's submission was the only design to clear every go/no-go criterion, and on 5 November 2004 SOCOM's selection board, made up of senior operators drawn from every special-operations component, unanimously chose it. The program produced three variants, the 5.56mm Mk 16 SCAR-L, the 7.62mm Mk 17 SCAR-H, and eventually the Mk 20 sniper variant covered here.

◆ On the Record
01SOCOM's Mk 16 SCAR-L lost nearly all of its budgeted orders after adoption, while the Mk 17 SCAR-H survived on a reduced buy, an unusual outcome for a program built around one shared modular rifle family.6

From Sniper Variant to Type Classification

The Mk 17 SCAR-H reached SOCOM service in 2009, and the sniper community within SOCOM refined an accurized version of it for long-range precision work soon after.5,6 That refined rifle underwent in-theater combat assessments, and on 28 October 2010 the Milestone Decision Authority granted it Milestone C, clearing it for full-rate production under the formal designation Mk 20 Mod 0 Sniper Support Rifle.1,4 Fielding to SOCOM units began in mid-May 2011, replacing the aging Mk 11 Mod 0 (a suppressed SR-25 derivative) and the Mk 14 Mod 0 through Mod 2 rifles that special-operations sniper teams had been using as their semi-automatic support weapon up to that point.1

Beyond SOCOM, the rifle found buyers among allied special-operations units. France acquired approximately 2,600 units of the sniper-configured SCAR-H in 2019 for its special-operations forces, and Lithuania has fielded SCAR-H precision rifles as part of its own special-operations rearmament.5 Cyprus equips its National Guard special forces with both the standard SCAR-H and the sniper variant.5 France's interest did not stop there. In the years since, the French Ministry of the Armed Forces separately selected the newer FN SCAR-H PR (Precision Rifle) as a next-generation designated-marksman weapon, a distinct and later procurement built specifically around the precision role rather than a straight Mk 20 purchase.9,10

FN opened a civilian market for the design in 2019 with the SCAR 20S, a semi-automatic-only version of the SSR sold to US buyers, and added a 6.5mm Creedmoor chambering in 2020 alongside the original 7.62mm NATO option.8 The civilian SCAR 20S sells for roughly $4,499, giving anyone curious about the FN SCAR SSR's unit cost a rough commercial benchmark, even though the military Mk 20 itself is not sold on the civilian market and its government contract price is not public.8

Current Status, a Rifle Already Being Phased Out

The FN SCAR SSR remains in SOCOM inventory today, but its long-term future is already decided. SOCOM's broader SCAR-H family entered service in 2009 and by 2026 is completing what one trade publication called a 17-year run.6 The 7.62/5.56mm Mk 17 assault-rifle role is being replaced by the Mk 24, a multi-caliber rifle from LMT Defense that can swap between 7.62 NATO and 6.5mm Creedmoor barrels, under a ten-year, up-to-$92-million contract SOCOM awarded in August 2025, with fielding expected before October 2026.6,7 The precision, sniper-support role the Mk 20 fills is being addressed separately. In 2023 SOCOM awarded Geissele Automatics a roughly $29 million contract for the MRGG-S, a dedicated 20 inch precision rifle chambered in 6.5mm Creedmoor built specifically to replace aging 7.62mm designated marksman platforms including the Mk 20 and the SR-25-based Mk 11.7 FN America itself confirmed on 16 October 2025 that it had wound down civilian SCAR commercial production entirely, keeping only the SCAR 15P pistol variant in the lineup, a clear signal that the platform's commercial and, soon, military life cycle is closing.6

US Army Special Forces and other SOCOM elements carried the Mk 20 SSR through the War in Afghanistan (2001-2021), part of the wider War on Terror, where the documented 2012 firefight photograph places the rifle in an active combat role rather than a training or ceremonial one.1 French special-operations forces, including Commandos Marine, carried FN SCAR-H family rifles including sniper-configured examples during Operation Barkhane, the roughly 3,000-strong French counterterrorism operation across Mali, Niger, and the wider Sahel that ran from August 2014 until its formal end in November 2022.11

Reporting on the FN SCAR SSR's specific role in any single named engagement beyond the 2012 Afghanistan photograph is thin. Special-operations units by design do not publicize weapon-level after-action detail, and most open-source accounts of the rifle in the field describe general employment by sniper-support teams rather than naming individual operations.

05 / Varyantlar

The core Mk 20 Mod 0 remains a 7.62x51mm NATO rifle, but FN has iterated the design commercially since its military debut. The SCAR 20S, introduced in 2019, is the semi-automatic civilian equivalent of the Mk 20, built for hunters and competitive precision shooters rather than special-operations sniper teams.8 FN added a 6.5mm Creedmoor chambering to the SCAR 20S in 2020, giving the civilian platform a flatter-shooting, longer-range cartridge option the original 7.62mm military Mk 20 never received.8 The 6.5mm SCAR 20S carries a slightly heavier, non-stepped barrel profile compared to the 7.62mm version and a fully adjustable side-folding stock, along with a two-stage Geissele Super SCAR trigger and a SureFire muzzle brake as standard equipment, features aimed squarely at the civilian precision-rifle market rather than at SOCOM's requirements.8

Within military channels, France's later selection of the FN SCAR-H PR (Precision Rifle) sits alongside the Mk 20 as a related but separate development, built specifically around designated-marksman requirements for French forces rather than a rebadged American Mk 20.9,10 Whether any future export Mk 20-derivative rifles will follow the US shift toward 6.5mm Creedmoor chambering, the way FN's own civilian SCAR 20S already has, is not yet settled in the sourcing available.

United States Special Operations Command is the confirmed primary operator of the Mk 20 Mod 0 SSR, having fielded it since May 2011 as the standard semi-automatic sniper support weapon across SOCOM's component commands.1 France acquired around 2,600 SCAR-H sniper-configured rifles in 2019 for its special-operations forces, Lithuania has fielded SCAR-H precision rifles in its own special-operations units, and Cyprus issues both the standard and sniper-configured SCAR-H to its National Guard special forces.5

Beyond these four, wider defense references list additional SCAR-H family operators, including several European, Latin American, and Southeast Asian special-operations forces, but published sourcing rarely distinguishes cleanly between a country's purchase of the standard Mk 17 configuration and the specific sniper-configured Mk 20 pattern. Readers using the FN SCAR SSR's operator list to gauge which militaries specifically use the sniper variant, rather than the SCAR-H family broadly, should treat anything beyond the United States, France, Lithuania, and Cyprus as unconfirmed for this exact configuration.

07 / MASS Score

The FN SCAR SSR's most direct rival inside SOCOM's own inventory was never really the Mk 17 it was built from, since that rifle fills the assault-rifle role rather than the sniper-support one. The real point of comparison is the M110 Semi-Automatic Sniper System, the Army's parallel semi-automatic 7.62mm DMR built on the AR-10 pattern rather than the SCAR's gas-piston, monolithic-receiver layout. Both rifles chase the same goal, semi-automatic fire at ranges beyond a standard carbine, but they reached SOCOM and the wider US military through different doctrinal paths. The Army adopted the M110 for general designated-marksman use across conventional infantry formations, while SOCOM built the Mk 20 specifically as a sniper-team support weapon derived from a rifle it already owned for a different role.

The FN SCAR SSR's gas-piston operating system was one of the selling points of the whole SCAR family during the 2004 trials, since it keeps combustion fouling off the bolt carrier compared to a direct-impingement design like the M110's, a real operational advantage in the dusty conditions of Afghanistan where both rifles saw extensive combat use. The M110, for its part, is built on the AR-10 pattern SR-25, the same base rifle that FN's own Mk 11 predecessor used, which gave the Army rifle a wider parts and accessory ecosystem within US service by the time both weapons were fielded side by side. Neither rifle displaced the other. They served different services under different acquisition programs, and both are now being phased toward 6.5mm Creedmoor successors as SOCOM and the Army separately conclude that 7.62x51mm NATO no longer stretches far enough for the ranges modern designated-marksman doctrine demands.
