The Ruger AR-556 is the entry-level AR-15-style rifle built by Sturm, Ruger & Co., chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO and the closely related .223 Remington. Ruger introduced the rifle on September 29, 2014, as a stripped-down, lower-priced alternative to its own SR-556 line, aiming the new gun squarely at first-time buyers and budget-conscious shooters rather than competition or law-enforcement customers.1,2 Within a few years it became the best-selling AR-15 pattern rifle in the United States by volume, with Ruger and industry trackers crediting it with well over 500,000 units sold across its production run.6,7

Güçlü yönler
  • low retail price relative to mil-spec build quality
  • cold hammer-forged barrel, a feature rare at this price tier
  • made almost entirely in-house at Ruger's Mayodan, North Carolina plant
  • reliable out of the box, minimal break-in required
Zayıf yönler
  • base model lacks a free-float handguard or M-LOK rail
  • fewer premium touches (two-stage trigger, adjustable gas block) than pricier AR-15s
  • discontinued at the end of 2025, no longer Ruger's current entry-level AR

The Ruger AR-556 belongs to the semi-automatic rifles category and, within that category, to the crowded field of AR-15-style gas-operated carbines built around a detachable magazine and a rotating bolt locked into a barrel extension. Ruger AR-556 specifications, Ruger AR-556 price, and how the Ruger AR-556 compares with rivals such as the Smith & Wesson M&P15, the Colt AR-15, and the Bushmaster XM-15 are among the most searched questions about any budget American rifle, largely because the AR-556 spent a decade as the default recommendation for a first AR-15 purchase.

Ruger built the AR-556 to compete on price without cutting the parts that affect reliability. The barrel is cold hammer-forged rather than button-rifled, the bolt carrier group is properly staked and shot-peened, and the upper and lower receivers are forged 7075-T6 aluminum rather than cast, all details more commonly found on rifles costing several hundred dollars more.4,5 Ruger accomplished this partly through vertical integration, machining the vast majority of the rifle's own components at its Mayodan facility instead of buying finished parts from outside vendors.5

The Direct Impingement Action and Cold Hammer-Forged Barrel

The Ruger AR-556 cycles on a gas-operated direct impingement system, tapping propellant gas from a carbine-length port and routing it through a steel tube straight into the bolt carrier rather than through a separate piston.1 The barrel is a medium-contour, cold hammer-forged 4140 chrome-moly steel unit with M4 feed ramp cuts, measuring 16.10 inches (409mm) on the standard M4-profile models.8 Rifling twist is 1 in 8 inches (203mm), a rate fast enough to stabilize the heavier 62- to 77-grain 5.56mm projectiles common in modern military and defensive loads, not just the lighter 55-grain .223 Remington bullets that older, slower AR-15 twist rates were designed around.8

The bolt and carrier lock into a barrel extension machined into the rear of the barrel itself, the same architecture ArmaLite and Colt established on the original AR-15, which is why the upper and lower receivers can be separated and swapped without disturbing the barrel's headspace. Magazine capacity is 30 rounds in a standard STANAG-pattern detachable box magazine, and the AR-556 weighs 2.95 kg (6.5 lb) empty, a figure consistent across independent reviews and Ruger's own published specifications.8

Aluminum Receiver, Fixed Handguard, and the Optics-Ready Flat-Top

The Ruger AR-556's upper and lower receivers are forged from 7075-T6 aluminum, hard-coat anodized, with a flat-top upper carrying a full-length Picatinny rail for mounting optics.8 The standard-model handguard, however, is a fixed two-piece unit made from heat-resistant glass-filled nylon rather than a free-floating rail, which keeps costs down but means the barrel is not fully isolated from handguard pressure.8 Ruger later addressed that gap with a separate AR-556 Free-Float Handguard model and the pricier AR-556 MPR, both of which add an aluminum handguard with M-LOK accessory slots along the 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions.9,10

Furniture on the base model is black polymer throughout, including a six-position M4-style collapsible stock and standard A2-style pistol grip.8 Sights are Ruger's own Rapid Deploy system, a windage-adjustable rear aperture that folds flat when an optic is mounted, paired with an elevation-adjustable front post, and the rifle retains a bayonet lug on its proprietary front sight base, unusual among budget AR-15s that often omit it entirely to save cost.1 A forward assist and spent-case deflector round out the mil-spec-influenced controls.

Ruger's 2014 Entry Into the Budget AR-15 Market

By 2014, Ruger already sold the piston-driven Ruger SR-556 at a premium price point, but the mainstream AR-15 market had shifted toward cheaper, direct impingement carbines led by rivals like the Smith & Wesson M&P15, introduced in 2006, and long-running lines from Colt and Bushmaster.15 Ruger's own Mini-14 carbine covered the budget end of its rifle catalog but used a completely different action and magazine system, leaving Ruger without an entry in the fastest-growing segment of the American rifle market.1

The AR-556 filled that gap by reusing Ruger's existing manufacturing lines and applying the company's long-standing preference for in-house, vertically integrated production.5 Trade press coverage at launch noted that Ruger had essentially built a mil-spec-pattern AR-15 using its own forging and machining capacity rather than assembling a rifle from purchased components, a strategy that let the AR-556 undercut the cheapest Ruger Mini-14 configuration by a meaningful margin while still carrying the Ruger name.3

Becoming America's Best-Selling AR-15

Sales tracking from GunBroker.com placed the Ruger AR-556 at the top of the annual semi-automatic rifle sales chart in 2019, up from fifth place the year before, and it held second place in 2020 even as overall firearm sales spiked.6,7 Reviewers consistently credited the rifle's reliability and price rather than any single standout feature. American Rifleman's original test called it a well-made, reliable entry-level package that arrived ready to shoot without the fitting or break-in issues sometimes seen on other budget ARs, and a later 1,200-round torture test by an independent outlet recorded only a single magazine-related stoppage.4,17

Sturm, Ruger & Co., founded in 1949 by William B. Ruger and Alexander Sturm, built its reputation on revolvers, bolt-action hunting rifles, and rimfire pistols long before entering the AR-15 market, which makes the AR-556's rapid rise to best-seller status notable within the company's own product history.18 The rifle also became attached to a serious legal matter unrelated to its design. On March 22, 2021, a gunman used a Ruger AR-556 Pistol variant, an AR-15-pattern firearm built with a 10.5 inch barrel and a stabilizing brace instead of a shoulder stock, to kill ten people at a King Soopers grocery store in Boulder, Colorado.19 Because the stabilizing brace configuration is legally classified as a pistol rather than a rifle under U.S. federal law, it faced fewer purchase restrictions than a rifle-length AR-556 would have, and the case became the basis of an ongoing product liability lawsuit against Sturm, Ruger & Co. that was still moving through Colorado courts as of late 2025.14

For 2026, Ruger discontinued the AR-556 name entirely, replacing it with a new Harrier series built partly at facilities the company acquired from the defunct Anderson Manufacturing.12,13 The Harrier keeps the AR-556's core direct impingement layout while adding a free-floated M-LOK handguard as standard equipment, at a starting MSRP close to the AR-556's own launch price twelve years earlier.12

04 / Varyantlar

The base Ruger AR-556 (model numbers 8500 and 8515) shipped with a fixed glass-filled nylon handguard, a 16.1 inch barrel, and the Rapid Deploy folding sight set, at an original MSRP of $749.2,8 Ruger later expanded the line considerably.

  • AR-556 Free-Float Handguard (model 8529/8530) swaps the fixed handguard for a free-floating aluminum unit with M-LOK slots and a continuous top rail, without changing the barrel or action.9
  • AR-556 MPR (Multi-Purpose Rifle) uses an 18 inch barrel on a mid-length gas system, a radial-port muzzle brake, and a two-stage Ruger Elite 452 trigger, aimed at hunters and long-range shooters rather than budget buyers.10
  • AR-556 Pistol uses a 10.5 inch barrel with a stabilizing brace in place of a stock, legally regulated as a handgun rather than a rifle, the variant later linked to the 2021 Boulder shooting described above.19
  • TALO Distributors exclusives, sold only through a single wholesale distributor network, dressed the AR-556 MPR in unusual finishes such as Kryptek Highlander camouflage with a carbon-fiber-wrapped PROOF Research barrel, and limited-run Rose Gold and White Cerakote color schemes.11

None of these variants received a distinct model name from Ruger's marketing. All were sold and cataloged under the AR-556 family umbrella until the entire line was retired at the end of 2025.12 Buyers who wanted a step above the base AR-556 without moving to a different brand entirely typically chose the Free-Float Handguard model, a smaller upgrade than jumping to the full MPR package.

The naming convention also mattered commercially. By keeping every configuration under the single AR-556 name rather than assigning new model names the way Colt or Bushmaster sometimes did, Ruger kept the entire lineup searchable under one recognizable brand, right up until the 2026 Harrier relaunch replaced it with a fresh naming scheme.12

Ruger and Smith & Wesson approached the same budget-AR-15 problem from opposite manufacturing traditions. Smith & Wesson entered the rifle market from a handgun-only background when it launched the M&P15 in January 2006, initially outsourcing more of its AR-15 production before building up in-house capability over time.15 Ruger came at the same price point from the other direction, already running high-volume forging and machining lines for its handguns and hunting rifles, and simply pointed that existing capacity at an AR-15 design starting in 2014.5 The practical result for buyers was two rifles that converged on nearly identical weight, price, and feature sets despite arriving at the same target from different corporate histories.

Rifling twist is the most consequential difference between the two rifles, ahead of weight or barrel length. Ruger's faster 1 in 8 inch twist stabilizes heavier 69-grain-and-up 5.56mm NATO projectiles more reliably than the M&P15's more common 1 in 9 inch twist, a real advantage for buyers planning to shoot heavier match or defensive ammunition, while the M&P15's slower twist can shoot very light varmint bullets marginally better.15 Both companies' base models skip the free-float handguard and M-LOK rail that their own upgraded product lines (Ruger's AR-556 MPR, Smith & Wesson's M&P15 Sport III) later added.

Against the Colt AR-15, the comparison is really about brand premium rather than mechanical differences. Colt's civilian AR-15 line traces directly back to the original 1964 Sporter and still commands a price well above budget rifles like the AR-556, largely on trademark and heritage rather than a functional performance gap.1 Against the Bushmaster XM-15, another long-running budget-tier AR-15 family, the AR-556's main advantage was Ruger's in-house cold-hammer-forged barrel, a feature Bushmaster and other assemblers more often source from outside vendors.

07 / Sıkça Sorulan Sorular

Is the Ruger AR-556 still in production? No. Ruger discontinued the AR-556 line at the end of 2025 and replaced it for 2026 with the new Harrier series, which uses a similar direct impingement action but adds a free-floated M-LOK handguard as standard equipment.12,13

What caliber does the Ruger AR-556 use? The Ruger AR-556 is chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO, and it also safely fires the shorter-chambered, lower-pressure .223 Remington round.8

How much does a Ruger AR-556 cost? The AR-556 launched in 2014 at an MSRP of $749, with later standard models listed near $1,019 MSRP before typical street prices settled closer to $600 to $830 depending on retailer and configuration, and MPR and TALO-exclusive variants priced well above $1,000.2,11

Is the Ruger AR-556 good for law enforcement use? No national or military agency formally adopted the AR-556. Small and mid-sized U.S. departments have purchased it through individual-officer-purchase programs because of its low cost relative to premium patrol-rifle brands.16

How does the Ruger AR-556 compare to the Smith & Wesson M&P15? The two rifles are close in weight, price, and base features, with the main functional difference being the AR-556's faster 1 in 8 inch rifling twist against the M&P15's more common 1 in 9 inch twist.15
