The Colt AR-15 is the semi-automatic-only civilian rifle line built by Colt's Manufacturing Company of West Hartford, Connecticut, and it is the reason the name AR-15 exists at all. ArmaLite designed the original AR-15 in the mid-1950s under chief engineer Eugene Stoner, then sold the design and the AR-15 trademark to Colt in 1959 for a reported $75,000 plus a royalty on future production.1,2 Colt used that purchase two ways at once. It refined the rifle into the select-fire M16 for the U.S. military, and it kept the AR-15 name for itself, eventually selling a semi-automatic-only commercial version of the same basic rifle to hunters, target shooters, and later law enforcement agencies.1 That civilian product, distinct from the M16 and its carbine derivatives, is the rifle covered below.

Güçlü yönler
  • light recoiling 5.56mm cartridge, easy to shoot accurately
  • modular upper/lower design, wide parts and accessory market
  • decades-long production run and brand recognition
  • semi-automatic only, cannot be readily converted to fire automatically
Zayıf yönler
  • among the most politically and legally scrutinized rifles ever sold
  • banned or restricted by name in several U.S. states and countries
  • Colt-specific parts pricing runs above many AR-15-pattern competitors

Colt is not the only company making AR-15-style rifles today. Colt's original patents on the design expired in 1977, and once they lapsed, dozens of other manufacturers began producing their own versions of the same basic rifle, including Bushmaster, Ruger, and Smith & Wesson.1 Colt still holds the AR-15 trademark itself, which is why only Colt's own product line can legally be marketed under that exact name, even though the public and the press use AR-15 as a generic term for the whole category of gas-operated, semi-automatic rifles built on the same pattern.

The Colt AR-15 belongs to the semi-automatic rifles category, and inside that category it sits specifically among AR-15-pattern rifles built around a detachable magazine and a rotating bolt locked into a barrel extension. Chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO and the closely related .223 Remington, it has been in continuous or near-continuous commercial production since 1964, interrupted only by a short, deliberate 2019 to 2020 pause. Colt AR-15 specifications, Colt AR-15 price, and how the Colt AR-15 compares with other AR-15-pattern rifles are among the most searched questions about any American civilian firearm, largely because the rifle sits at the center of the U.S. gun-control debate as well as the sport-shooting and hunting markets.

Industry marketing later rebranded the whole category, including the Colt AR-15, as the modern sporting rifle, a term the National Shooting Sports Foundation coined in 2009 specifically to reposition AR-15-pattern rifles as hunting and sport-shooting equipment rather than military look-alikes.10 The label caught on across gun retailers and manufacturers, Colt included, even though it describes the same semi-automatic mechanism the Colt AR-15 has used since 1964.

The Direct Impingement Gas System Colt Inherited From ArmaLite

The Colt AR-15 uses Stoner's gas-operated direct impingement system, in which propellant gas is tapped from a port partway down the barrel and routed through a thin steel tube straight back into the bolt carrier, cycling the action without a separate piston.1 The rotating bolt locks into an extension machined into the rear of the barrel rather than into the aluminum receiver itself, which is why an AR-15 upper and lower can be separated and swapped without touching the barrel's headspace. Colt's own AR-15 production has used chrome-lined bore and chamber surfaces on most models since the M16A1 era, a feature carried over into the commercial Sporter line to resist corrosion and erosion from sustained shooting.18

Barrel length has varied by model across six decades of production. Colt's original 1964 Sporter used a 20 inch barrel, while most of today's carbine-length Colt AR-15s, including the LE6920 and AR6721 platforms, use a 16.1 inch (409mm) barrel under a flat-top upper receiver with an integral Picatinny rail.15,18 Twist rates have moved the same direction as bullet weights. Early Colt AR-15s used a 1 in 12 inch twist suited to 55-grain .223 Remington bullets. Current-production Colt barrels are commonly cut at 1 in 7 inch or 1 in 9 inch instead, to stabilize heavier 62- to 77-grain 5.56mm loads.1,18 A 16.1 inch Colt AR-15 barrel typically produces a muzzle velocity in the neighborhood of 2,900 to 3,050 feet per second (about 885 to 930 m/s) with standard 55-grain ammunition, with a practical point-target effective range cited at roughly 500 meters for full-length AR-15 barrels.17

The Lower Receiver Differences That Keep It Semi-Automatic Only

The single most important design fact about the Colt AR-15 is what Colt deliberately left out of it. A civilian Colt AR-15 uses a different hammer, disconnector, trigger, and bolt carrier than a select-fire M16, and the lower receiver itself lacks the third pin hole and internal geometry needed to accept a military auto sear.1 Most other parts, magazines, sights, upper receivers, barrels, and furniture, are interchangeable between the semi-automatic Colt AR-15 and its select-fire military relatives, which is exactly why regulators have spent decades arguing over how meaningful that single internal difference really is.

▣Çalışma Sistemi5MOD.5

Colt's receiver is machined from 7075-T6 aluminum forgings, with a black polymer handguard, pistol grip, and stock (glass-filled nylon on most modern models) replacing the wood furniture typical of older-generation battle rifles like the M14.

◇Namlu ve Nişangah5MOD.5

Weight runs light for a rifle-caliber long gun. A current Colt LE6920-pattern rifle weighs about 6.95 lb (3.15 kg) empty, rising to roughly 7.3 lb (3.31 kg) on heavy-barrel AR6721-pattern models, both figures well under half the weight of a Vietnam-era M14 battle rifle in 7.62mm.15,18 Overall length on a collapsible-stock Colt AR-15 runs about 32 inches (813mm) with the stock collapsed and 35.5 inches (902mm) extended.15,18 Standard magazine capacity is 30 rounds in a STANAG-pattern detachable box magazine, though Colt has also sold 5- and 10-round magazines at various points to meet state and federal capacity restrictions described below.

◆Yapı6MOD.6

Colt's Match Target and Sporter Target models add a heavier HBAR (heavy barrel) profile intended to resist barrel whip and heat during long strings of fire, a feature aimed squarely at High Power service rifle competitors rather than hunters or patrol officers.12 These competition-oriented Colt AR-15s typically pair the HBAR profile with a two-stage match trigger, while standard Sporter and law-enforcement-pattern models use a conventional single-stage mil-spec trigger.12

From ArmaLite's 1959 Sale to the 1964 Sporter Launch

Eugene Stoner and ArmaLite built the first AR-15 rifles in 1956 and 1957 as a lightweight alternative to the U.S. Army's M14, but ArmaLite lacked the manufacturing capacity to produce it at scale.2 ArmaLite sold both the AR-15 and the larger AR-10 design, along with their trademarks, to Colt in 1959. Colt's very first AR-15 sales were small lots of select-fire rifles sold to the Federation of Malaya (present-day Malaysia) and the United Kingdom in 1959, years before the U.S. Air Force and Army adopted the design as the M16.1 Colt did not begin selling a semi-automatic civilian version until 1964, when the first mass-production Colt AR-15 Sporter, later cataloged as the SP1, reached dealers with a 20 inch barrel and 5-round magazines.1,3

1964
First commercial sale of the semi-automatic Colt AR-15 SporterColt begins selling the SP1 to hunters and target shooters, marketed as a lightweight *space age* sporting rifle rather than a military-style weapon.[^3][^4]

Sales were slow at first. The rifle's fixed carrying handle and rear sight, inherited directly from the military M16 upper receiver, made it awkward to mount a scope, and hunters accustomed to wood-stocked bolt-action rifles were skeptical of its plastic furniture and stamped-looking aluminum receiver.3 Colt marketed the AR-15 Sporter to civilians as a featherweight varmint and small-game rifle, and to police departments as an accurate, low-recoil patrol carbine, two audiences that took years to fully embrace it.4

Through the late 1960s and 1970s, Colt refined the civilian line into models like the AR-15A2 Government Model and, from 1984, the AR-15A2 Sporter II, which mirrored the upper receiver features of the newly adopted military M16A2, including a case deflector and forward assist, while retaining a fixed 5-round magazine and semi-automatic-only fire control group.16 Colt's design patents on the core rifle expired in 1977, opening the door for other manufacturers to legally build their own AR-15-pattern rifles once Colt's exclusive claim on the mechanism lapsed, even though Colt kept the AR-15 name itself as a registered trademark.1

The 1994 Federal Ban and Colt's Compliant Models

California's 1989 Roberti-Roos Assault Weapons Control Act named the Colt AR-15 specifically as a banned rifle in that state, one of the first instances of a law targeting the AR-15 by brand name rather than by generic feature description.1 New Jersey followed in 1990 and Connecticut in 1993, both restricting the Colt AR-15 and similar rifles ahead of any federal action.1 The federal Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act, commonly called the 1994 assault weapons ban, took effect on September 13, 1994, and it too named the Colt AR-15 directly in its list of banned models.

Colt did not stop selling the rifle. Instead it modified the configuration to comply. Post-1994 Colt AR-15s built for civilian sale under names like the Match Target HBAR lost the bayonet lug, swapped the flash suppressor for a plain muzzle brake, and shipped with fixed, low-capacity magazines instead of the standard 30-round detachable magazine, the standard industry approach to keeping a semi-automatic rifle legal for sale during the ban decade.1 When the federal ban expired on its own sunset clause on September 13, 2004, Colt restored bayonet lugs, flash suppressors, and standard-capacity magazines across its Sporter and Match Target catalog, and the modern Colt AR-15 lineup, including the AR6720, AR6721, and LE6920-pattern rifles, has been sold in that unrestricted configuration ever since in states that allow it.1

◆ On the Record
01Colt's very first AR-15 buyers in 1959 were the armed forces of Malaysia and the United Kingdom, not American civilians, since the commercial semi-automatic Sporter did not exist yet.1
02The 1994 federal ban named the Colt AR-15 as a specific banned model by brand, an approach later gun legislation moved away from in favor of feature-based definitions.1

Colt AR-15 Sporter-1 carbines, cosmetically modified with fake suppressors and shortened furniture, stood in for the military CAR-15/XM177 in both films, since real select-fire CAR-15s were far harder for prop houses to obtain and license than a semi-automatic civilian Colt AR-15.13

Bankruptcy, the CZ Group Sale, and the 2019 Production Pause

Colt's modern corporate history has been rockier than its rifle's sales figures suggest. After losing a major U.S. Army M4 carbine contract in 2013, Colt Defense LLC filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in June 2015 and emerged under new ownership, private equity firm Sciens Management, in early 2016.5 In September 2019, Colt announced it was suspending Colt AR-15 production for the civilian market entirely, with chief executive Dennis Veilleux citing years of oversupply in the U.S. modern sporting rifle market and telling reporters that military and law enforcement contracts were absorbing all of Colt's rifle manufacturing capacity anyway.5

The pause did not last long. Rising civilian demand during 2020, driven by pandemic-era uncertainty and a historic surge in U.S. gun sales, pulled Colt back into the civilian AR-15 market within about nine months, and by late June 2020 the company had shipped its first new batch of civilian Colt AR-15s to dealers since the 2019 suspension.6 In February 2021, Czech arms maker Ceska Zbrojovka Group completed a roughly $220 million acquisition of Colt's Manufacturing Company, ending more than 180 years of American ownership of the Colt brand while pledging to keep rifle production at Colt's West Hartford, Connecticut facility.7,8

04 / Varyantlar

The core Colt AR-15 has spawned a long list of named factory configurations rather than dramatically different rifles, since the upper/lower split keeps most changes confined to the barrel, handguard, and furniture.

  • Colt AR-15 Sporter / SP1 (1964 to late 1980s), the original 20 inch barrel, fixed carry-handle model that started civilian AR-15 sales, sold without a forward assist on the earliest production.3,4
  • Colt AR-15A2 Sporter II / Government Model (1984 onward), which added the M16A2-pattern case deflector and forward assist while staying semi-automatic only.16
  • Colt Match Target HBAR / Match Target Competition, heavy-barrel target configurations built for High Power service rifle competition, historically popular at the National Matches held at Camp Perry.12
  • Colt Sporter Lightweight and Colt AR-15A3 Tactical Carbine, carbine-length, collapsible-stock variants introduced through the 1990s and 2000s as police and civilian demand shifted toward shorter, handier configurations.
  • Colt LE6920 and AR6720/AR6721 (2000s to present), the modern flat-top, Picatinny-rail civilian and law enforcement carbines that make up most current Colt AR-15 production, differing mainly in barrel profile and twist rate.15,18
  • Colt Expanse M4 (2020 to present), a lower-cost, roughly $749 MSRP civilian carbine introduced as Colt resumed civilian sales, aimed at the budget end of a market Colt had previously ceded to competitors.14

Colt is far from the only manufacturer building this pattern of rifle today. Once Colt's core patents lapsed in 1977, companies including Bushmaster, Ruger, and Smith & Wesson began producing their own AR-15-style rifles built to the same magazine, upper receiver, and lower receiver interfaces, without paying Colt anything beyond the original expired license.1 Only Colt's own rifles can legally carry the AR-15 name on the receiver, since Colt retained that specific trademark even as the underlying mechanism became public domain, though a related Colt trademark claim over the term M4 was found generic and unenforceable by a federal court in 2007.9

A separate Colt entity complicates the naming picture further. Colt Canada, formerly Diemaco, became part of Colt in 2005 and builds the select-fire Colt Canada C7 and Colt Canada C8 rifles adopted by Canada and several allied militaries. Those are military service rifles descended from the same original design and remain distinct from the semi-automatic civilian Colt AR-15 in every regulatory and mechanical sense.

The Colt AR-15's main user base is the American civilian market itself, alongside a substantial number of United States municipal, county, and state law enforcement agencies that issue Colt's semi-automatic LE6920-pattern carbines as patrol rifles.15

Colt does not disclose exact civilian sales figures for the AR-15 line specifically, but total production across the commercial Colt AR-15 catalog since 1964 is commonly put at more than 2 million rifles.1 Competitive shooters make up a smaller but historically important group, with Colt HBAR and Match Target rifles fielded for decades in High Power service rifle competition at matches including the National Matches at Camp Perry, Ohio.12

Because it is semi-automatic only and was never adopted as a standard-issue infantry rifle, the civilian Colt AR-15 has no combat conflict history of its own to record, unlike the select-fire M16 family built from the same original ArmaLite design. It has, however, figured in a number of high-profile criminal shootings that shaped U.S. gun policy debate, including the 1977 Klamath Falls, Oregon nightclub shooting, the April 1996 Port Arthur massacre in Australia that killed 35 people and led directly to Australia's 1996 National Firearms Agreement, and the October 2018 Pittsburgh synagogue shooting in which all eleven victims were killed with a Colt AR-15.1,11

06 / MASS Score

Colt's position against rivals like the Ruger AR-556 or the Bushmaster XM-15 is less about raw specifications, which converge tightly across the AR-15 category because every maker builds to the same magazine and receiver interfaces, and more about what buyers are actually paying for. A Colt AR-15 typically carries a higher retail price than a comparable Ruger AR-556, largely on the strength of Colt's original trademark, its decades of active U.S. military and law enforcement contracts, and a reputation for mil-spec parts tolerances that predates the modern AR-15 market entirely.1,15

The Ruger AR-556 undercuts Colt on price while matching most of its core specifications, including the same 5.56x45mm NATO chambering, direct impingement gas system, and 30-round detachable magazine, and has become one of the best-selling AR-15-pattern rifles in the United States precisely by competing on cost rather than brand history. The Bushmaster XM-15 occupies similar territory to Ruger's rifle, and unlike Colt, both companies entered the AR-15 market only after Colt's original patents expired in 1977, building their reputations on price and availability rather than a direct military supply relationship.

The Colt AR-15 remains in production and in active sale, and the 2021 change of ownership to Ceska Zbrojovka Group has not altered that. Whether the Colt name is worth its premium over a Ruger AR-556 or a Smith & Wesson M&P15 on specifications alone is a harder case to make, since the underlying mechanism is functionally identical across the category by design. What buyers pay extra for with a Colt AR-15 is mostly the trademark and the manufacturing history behind it, not a mechanical advantage the rival brands lack.

07 / Sıkça Sorulan Sorular

Is the Colt AR-15 the same rifle as the military M16 or M4? No. The Colt AR-15 sold to civilians is semi-automatic only, with a lower receiver, hammer, disconnector, and bolt carrier that differ from the select-fire M16 and M4 used by the U.S. military, even though the two share the same basic ArmaLite-derived design and Colt manufactured both.1

How much does a Colt AR-15 cost? Recent Colt AR-15 models range from about $749 MSRP for the budget-oriented Expanse M4 up to roughly $1,300 or more for standard Sporter and LE6920-pattern rifles, depending on configuration and retailer.14,18

What caliber does the Colt AR-15 use? Colt AR-15 rifles are chambered for 5.56x45mm NATO and the closely related .223 Remington cartridge, both of which can generally be fired safely from a 5.56-chambered Colt AR-15 barrel.1

Is the Colt AR-15 still in production? Yes. Colt paused civilian Colt AR-15 production in September 2019 citing market oversupply, then resumed civilian sales by mid-2020, and continued producing the line after Ceska Zbrojovka Group acquired Colt's Manufacturing Company in February 2021.5,6,7

Who actually owns the AR-15 trademark, Colt or someone else? Colt's Manufacturing Company holds the registered AR-15 trademark, tracing back to ArmaLite's 1959 sale of the design and name, which is why only Colt's own rifles can legally be labeled AR-15 on the receiver even though the term is used generically across the whole rifle category.1
