Turkey rearmed its infantry with a domestically designed 7.62x51mm NATO rifle in 2014, replacing the license-built Heckler & Koch G3 that Turkey's state arsenal had assembled under license since the 1970s.1 The MPT-76 (Milli Piyade Tüfeği, national infantry rifle) is a gas-piston-operated, select-fire battle rifle with a rotating bolt and a detachable magazine, built around an AR-10 pattern receiver in 7075 aluminum alloy.2 It was developed by MKE (Mechanical and Chemical Industry Corporation), Turkey's state ordnance manufacturer, under a contract the defense procurement authority SSB signed with MKE on 22 January 2009.1

Güçlü yönler
  • Modern optics rails and adjustable stock over the fixed-stock G3
  • 7075 aluminum receiver rated for a long service barrel life
  • Passed extensive NATO-standard environmental testing
  • Modular platform spawned DMR and compact export variants
Zayıf yönler
  • Heavier 7.62mm chambering criticized for close-protection and rapid-deployment roles
  • Rotating buttstock adjustment seen as an awkward mechanism versus rivals
  • Early production batches reported recoil and barrel-heat complaints
  • Design origin disputed as too close to the HK417

The rifle almost ended up in a different caliber entirely. MKE's first attempt, a 2008 prototype called Mehmetçik-1, was chambered in 5.56x45mm. Troops who tested it wanted the power and reach of the 7.62mm G3 they already trusted, and the project was scrapped after a single prototype. MKE restarted the design around the larger cartridge, and that restart became the MPT-76.1,2

MKE put the design through 42 NATO-standard qualification tests, plus additional non-NATO trials, covering endurance, accuracy, extreme cold down to minus 40 Celsius, extreme heat up to 65 Celsius, sand, mud, rain, altitude and pressurized water immersion, before mass production began in 2014.2 Turkish press has repeated a claim that the MPT-76 is the only infantry rifle in the world to pass so many tests. That is promotional framing from a state manufacturer rather than an independently verified superlative, and it should be read with that caveat.2

Since 2014 the MPT-76 has become the standard shoulder weapon of the Turkish Armed Forces and Turkish police, spawned a designated-marksman derivative, a compact export model, and a Sarsılmaz-branded production line, and been exported to several African and Caucasus militaries. Its most persistent controversy is political, a public argument over whether the rifle marketed as the national rifle is genuinely an original Turkish design or a close copy of Heckler & Koch's HK417.

An HK417-Influenced Gas Piston System

The MPT-76 uses a short-stroke gas piston system that reviewers and MKE's own critics both describe as closely following the HK417's layout, a rotating bolt, quad Picatinny rail handguard and AR-10 style controls.3 MKE and defenders of the program argue the internals diverge in specific, engineering-relevant ways. The receiver and handguard use 7075 aluminum rather than the more common 6061 alloy, which MKE states gives roughly 15 percent more durability. The barrel uses a 1 in 10 inch twist with six grooves and carries a rated service life of about 15,000 rounds.3 Turkish defense reviewer Can Yazıcı has pushed back directly on the copy accusation, describing the MPT-76 and the HK417 as fundamentally different rifles despite the visual resemblance both share as members of the same AR-10 pattern gas-piston family.3

The standard rifle weighs about 4.2 kilograms unloaded and carries a 406mm (16 inch) barrel, firing 7.62x51mm NATO from a 20-round detachable box magazine at a cyclic rate near 700 rounds per minute and a muzzle velocity around 800 meters per second, with an effective range cited at 600 meters.2,4 All of these figures match consistently across manufacturer and enthusiast sources.

A Rotating Buttstock and Other Ergonomic Quirks

The most distinctive ergonomic detail is the adjustable stock, which must be rotated roughly 30 degrees counter-clockwise before its length of pull can be changed, a mechanism not found on the simpler sliding or folding stocks of the HK417 or FN SCAR-H.3 An angled polymer piece bridges the lower receiver and the handguard and has to be removed for disassembly, another detail enthusiast reviewers flag as slightly awkward next to Western peers.3 Iron sights on the MPT-76 use a drum-style rear aperture that reviewers trace to FN's SCAR series rather than to Heckler & Koch's designs, evidence that MKE drew on more than one existing rifle rather than tracing a single lineage back to one source.5

▣Çalışma Sistemi6MOD.6

Turkish soldier feedback collected around the 2014 first deliveries reportedly rated the MPT-76 ahead of the G3 across every category tested, citing the optics rail, adjustable stock and lighter modern furniture against the G3's fixed stock and iron-sights-only configuration.1 Forum-level complaints from Turkish military enthusiasts describe a rockier early service history than the official record suggests. Reported issues include the stock loosening under automatic fire, barrel heating, and stronger felt recoil in early production batches, with later batches said to address these.6 MKE's own public position has been that no problematic feedback has reached the company, a stance that sits in tension with the forum accounts even if it does not amount to a documented reliability failure or recall.6

MKE and Turkey's defense procurement authority, then called SSM and now SSB, signed the development contract for a modern indigenous 7.62mm rifle on 22 January 2009, part of a broader push to reduce Turkey's dependence on foreign small arms and grow the country's own defense industry.1 The MPT-76 first appeared publicly at three defense exhibitions in 2014, Eurosatory, ADEX and MSPO, and the first 200 production rifles were delivered on 18 May 2014 with reportedly positive troop feedback.1

2014
First production deliveryMKE hands over the first 200 MPT-76 rifles on 18 May 2014, after passing 42 NATO-standard qualification tests.[^2]

Full-scale procurement followed in stages. A June 2015 contract placed an order for 20,000 rifles with MKE itself, the first tranche of an initial production run of roughly 45,000 rifles split across three manufacturers, MKE building 20,000, the subcontractor Kalekalıp building 15,000, and Sarsılmaz building 10,000.7 A December 2015 contract with Kalekalıp for 15,014 rifles was valued at roughly 18 million dollars, working out to about 1,200 dollars per rifle at the program's wholesale pricing, a figure that will have shifted with later contracts and inflation.7 The Turkish Armed Forces received its first full production batches in January 2017, with MKE committing to complete the remaining roughly 19,500 rifles of the initial order, all built domestically at the Kırıkkale Arms Factory with no imported components, by the end of that year.8,9

By December 2018 cumulative production stood at roughly 25,000 rifles. Turkish press in 2019 reported a further order exceeding 350,000 rifles, though that figure describes a long-term program target rather than a single confirmed contract, and combined production of the MPT-76 and its 5.56mm sibling the MPT-55 reached about 66,000 units by that year.1 That 66,000 figure is frequently cited as the MPT-76's production total, but it actually spans both rifle models together and is now several years stale, so current MPT-76-only production is almost certainly higher.

MKE returned to the exhibition circuit in 2024, showing the MPT-76 again at Eurosatory 2024 alongside its new Bora-12 shotgun.10 In 2026 the company displayed a further evolution at the EFES exhibition, the MPT-68, an MPT-76 airframe re-engineered for the newer, higher-pressure 6.8x51mm cartridge associated with the US Army's Next Generation Squad Weapon program, a much higher chamber pressure than 7.62 NATO that required a reinforced action.9 MKE has signaled that the KNT-76 marksman rifle, its PMT and MMT machine guns, and the JNG-90 sniper rifle are all candidates for eventual 6.8mm versions, suggesting the company sees the cartridge as a long-term successor across its whole family of 7.62mm designs rather than a one-off niche product.9

◆ On the Record
01The MPT-76 almost never existed in 7.62mm at all. Its first prototype, the 2008 Mehmetçik-1, was a 5.56mm design troops rejected in favor of keeping G3-level power.1
02The KNT-76 marksman variant is modeled in the tactical multiplayer game Squad, one of the few Turkish-made rifles to appear in a mainstream video game.11
03Turkish press has claimed the rifle passed 58 total tests, a promotional figure that should be read with some skepticism rather than as an independently confirmed record.2

Turkish units equipped with the MPT-76 are reported to have seen their combat debut during Operation Euphrates Shield (2016 to 2017), Turkey's cross-border campaign against Islamic State positions in northern Syria alongside Turkish-backed Syrian opposition forces, though independent primary confirmation specific to that operation is thin.2 The rifle has continued to see use in the broader Syrian Civil War and in Turkey's operations against the Kurdish-Turkish conflict's Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) fighters in southeastern Turkey and across the border in northern Iraq and Syria.2 Turkish officials have reported recovering 74 serialized MPT-76 rifles from PKK weapons caches, meaning a small number of Turkish-issue rifles ended up in PKK hands, likely through capture or loss, though this figure comes from a single summarized source and would benefit from a primary Turkish Ministry of National Defense statement to confirm the exact count.2

Turkish-backed factions and Turkish forces also carried the MPT-76 during the Second Libyan Civil War, per general reporting on Turkey's arms supply to Government of National Accord-aligned forces, though again without granular battle-level detail in open sources.1

In Somalia, the rifle equips the Gorgor (Eagle) commando units, an elite Somali counter-terror force trained and equipped under Turkey's long-running partnership with Somalia that also includes the Camp TURKSOM training base in Mogadishu. Some 450 MPT-76 rifles were delivered to Gorgor units, who have used them in the ongoing Somali Civil War against Al-Shabaab.12,13

No verified reporting ties the MPT-76 to actual combat use by Azerbaijan during the 2020 Second Nagorno-Karabakh War, despite Azerbaijan appearing among the rifle's reported adopters and joint-production partners in general defense-industry coverage. That specific combat claim remains unconfirmed and should be treated as such.

05 / Varyantlar

The KNT-76 is a designated-marksman derivative developed by MKE at the same Kırıkkale Arms Factory. It extends the barrel from 406mm to 508mm (20 inches), improving practical accuracy from around 4 MOA on the standard rifle to about 1.5 MOA and pushing effective range from 600 to 800 meters. Trigger pull is reduced by about 5 newtons to steady aim, and the rifle weighs roughly 500 grams more than the standard MPT-76 while retaining the same gas-piston, rotating-bolt action.14 An earlier semi-automatic marksman derivative shown at Indo Defense 2018 was labeled KPT-76, a naming inconsistency across sources that most likely reflects an early prototype name later folded into or replaced by the KNT-76 designation, rather than two permanently distinct product lines.15

The MPT-76 MH is a shortened, lighter variant (about 3.75 kilograms against the standard rifle's 4.2) aimed at special-forces customers, and it appears to be MKE's preferred export configuration for that market, with Peruvian special operations forces named as a user.16,1 A MPT-76 SH exists as a Sarsılmaz-branded production version built under the same state program.7 The MPT-55 is a 5.56x45mm sibling built on the same architecture, aimed at roles where a lighter cartridge is preferred. MKE's cumulative production figures for MPT-family rifles typically bundle the MPT-76 and MPT-55 together rather than reporting each separately, which is why total production numbers for the MPT-76 alone are hard to pin down precisely.

Cameroon's Rapid Intervention Battalion (BIR) adopted a 16-inch-barrel MPT-76 configuration, first shown publicly at the country's National Day parade in May 2023.17 The newest branch of the family, the MPT-68, was unveiled at the EFES 2026 exhibition, rechambering the MPT-76's architecture for the higher-pressure 6.8x51mm cartridge rather than 7.62 NATO.9

The Turkish Armed Forces and Turkish police are the MPT-76's primary users, having replaced their license-built G3s with it as the standard-issue service rifle since 2014.1 Beyond Turkey, confirmed foreign users span Africa and the Caucasus. Somalia's Gorgor commando units received 450 rifles as part of Turkey's train-equip partnership.12 Cameroon's BIR special forces adopted a 16-inch-barrel variant in 2023, a period when Cameroon has been diversifying its arms suppliers after the United States suspended some military assistance in 2019 over human rights concerns, while fighting both Boko Haram in the country's north and an Anglophone separatist insurgency in the west.17,18 Georgia received the KNT-76 marksman variant for its special operations forces in 2025.14 Peru's special operations forces use the compact MPT-76 MH.16

Azerbaijan, Senegal, Kosovo, Montenegro and Albania are also listed among the rifle's international adopters in defense-industry reporting, though public sourcing does not give unit numbers for any of them, and the Azerbaijan case in particular lacks confirmation of actual combat deployment.1 Pakistan and Chile have been reported as expressing interest in the rifle, which is not the same as a confirmed purchase or in-service status.1 Turkish Cypriot security forces in northern Cyprus have also reportedly received over 2,500 MPT-76 rifles, though that figure comes from a single source and could not be cross-verified independently.2

07 / MASS Score

The MPT-76 and the HK417 share enough visible DNA, an AR-10 style receiver, a short-stroke gas piston, a quad-rail handguard, that the resemblance itself became Turkey's loudest public argument about the rifle. Defense journalist Tuncer Bahçıvan used the resemblance to question how genuinely indigenous the national rifle branding really is, and separately criticized its selection for presidential close-protection duty as too heavy for that role, arguing a 5.56mm weapon would suit bodyguards better.19 MKE issued a formal rebuttal defending the design's Turkish engineering and its NATO-standard testing record, and pointed out that presidential guards actually carry a mix of the 7.62mm MPT-76 and the 5.56mm MPT-55 depending on the task, which blunts the too-heavy criticism somewhat since the heavier rifle was never the guards' only option.19 Reviewer Can Yazıcı's rebuttal is more technical, resting the case for a genuinely distinct design on the MPT-76's 7075 aluminum furniture and its own twist rate and barrel-life specification rather than a straight copy of HK's internals.3

Against the FN SCAR-H, the comparison is less about ancestry and more about modularity. Both are contemporary 7.62mm rifles with quad-rail handguards and adjustable stocks aimed at the same buyer, a NATO-aligned military wanting a modern replacement for an older battle rifle. FN's SCAR platform pushes modularity further, sharing a common lower receiver across the 5.56mm SCAR-L and 7.62mm SCAR-H so an operator can swap calibers by changing the upper. The MPT-76 has no equivalent caliber-swap feature, it is a single-caliber 7.62mm design (soon joined by the distinct 6.8x51mm MPT-68), and its most obvious FN borrowing is cosmetic rather than mechanical, a drum-style rear iron sight that MPT-76 reviewers trace directly to the SCAR family.5

The most direct comparison, though, remains the rifle the MPT-76 actually replaced. Turkish soldiers testing the MPT-76 against their old service G3 rated the newer rifle ahead across the board, crediting the optics rail and adjustable stock the fixed-stock G3 never had.1 Turkey's separate Turkish-built G3 production line, marketed today as the MKEK G3, remains the clearest domestic before-and-after for what four decades of service-rifle design change bought the Turkish infantryman.

08 / Sıkça Sorulan Sorular

What caliber is the MPT-76? The MPT-76 fires 7.62x51mm NATO from a 20-round detachable box magazine.2

Is the MPT-76 still in service? Yes. It has been the Turkish Armed Forces' standard-issue service rifle since 2014 and remains in production, with a marksman derivative (KNT-76) and a newer 6.8x51mm evolution (MPT-68) both still expanding the family as of 2026.1,9

How does the MPT-76 work? It is a short-stroke gas piston rifle with a rotating bolt, broadly similar in operating principle to the HK417, firing from a closed bolt in semi-automatic or select-fire configurations depending on model.2,3

Is the MPT-76 a copy of the HK417? It shares the HK417's general gas-piston, AR-10 pattern layout closely enough to fuel an ongoing Turkish public debate over the design's originality, but MKE and independent reviewers point to differences in receiver alloy, barrel specification and other details as evidence it is a distinct design rather than a straight copy.3,19

What does the MPT-76 cost? Program pricing derived from a December 2015 government contract works out to roughly 1,200 dollars per rifle, though that figure is over a decade old and reflects wholesale government contract pricing rather than any current retail price.7

What rifle did the MPT-76 replace? It replaced the license-built Heckler & Koch G3, which Turkish factories had assembled since the 1970s.1
