The Zastava M05N is the current NATO-caliber branch of Serbia's Kalashnikov-derived rifle program, a modernized 7.62x51mm export rifle built as the direct successor to the Zastava M77. Zastava Arms describes the M05N as keeping every proven characteristic of the M77 while adding integrated rails, a folding stock and other features drawn from the company's newer 5.56mm rifles.1 It is worth stating plainly what the M05N is not. Serbia also builds a completely separate designated-marksman line, the Zastava M76 and its successor the Zastava M91, chambered in 7.92x57mm Mauser and 7.62x54mmR. The M05N shares no mechanical descent with either rifle. It belongs to the other Zastava Kalashnikov branch, the one that runs from the Zastava M70 through the M77 to the M05N, all of them conventional select-fire battle rifles, not sniper rifles.

Güçlü yönler
  • direct modernization of the combat-proven M77 action
  • integrated Picatinny rails on the receiver and handguard
  • folding, M21-derived polymer stock
  • tritium iron sights usable in low light
  • mounts the BGP 40x46mm underbarrel grenade launcher
Zayıf yönler
  • no confirmed national military operator of the NATO-caliber N version specifically
  • no published production totals or unit cost
  • no documented combat deployment of the N variant itself
  • Serbia's 2025 arms-export suspension clouds future foreign sales

Zastava, the state-linked arsenal in Kragujevac, Serbia, sells the M05N mainly as an export product rather than as Serbia's own service rifle. Serbia's armed forces field the 7.62x39mm M05E and the 5.56mm Zastava M21 as their standard infantry weapons, not the 7.62x51mm N variant covered here.2 Sourcing on the M05N specifically is thin. No English-language encyclopedia entry covers it in depth, and the clearest information comes from Zastava's own product pages and a handful of dealer catalogs that mirror the same figures.1,3

A NATO-Caliber Descendant of the M77

The M05N keeps the gas-operated, long-stroke piston action and rotating bolt that Zastava scaled up from the 7.62x39mm M70 to build the original M77.1,4 It is select-fire, capable of both semi-automatic and automatic fire, cycling at a rated 620 rounds per minute with a stated tolerance of plus or minus 60 rounds.3,5 The barrel is hammer-forged and chrome-lined, with a 304.8mm rifling twist over six grooves, and it feeds from a 20-round detachable steel or polymer magazine weighing 0.25kg empty.3,5 The standard M05 N1 carries a 500mm barrel, giving an overall length of 1049mm extended and 804mm with the stock folded, while empty weight with a polymer magazine runs 4.45kg.3,5

A short-barrel sibling, the M05 N1 S, trims the barrel to 406mm and overall length to 955mm extended and 710mm folded, dropping empty weight to 4.35kg.3,5 Sights combine iron sights with tritium inserts for use in poor light, mounted alongside a full-length optic rail running along the receiver and handguards.1,3

Rails, a Folding Stock and a Grenade-Launcher Option

The M05 generation was the first line of Zastava Kalashnikov rifles built with integrated Picatinny rail handguards from the outset, rather than as a bolted-on aftermarket addition.6 The polymer stock folds to the right side of the receiver and is derived from the design used on the Zastava M21, replacing the underfolding or fixed wood stocks of the M77 generation.6 A lower handguard variant accepts the Zastava BGP 40x46mm underbarrel grenade launcher, giving the rifle a secondary indirect-fire option without a separate standalone launcher.3

▣Çalışma Sistemi6MOD.6

Later sub-variants added a railed receiver cover pattern borrowed from the Soviet PKM machine gun, the same modernization TheFirearmBlog documented across Zastava's newer AK-pattern rifles generally, letting a magnified optic sit directly over the bolt carrier rather than only on the handguard rail.6 Zastava's currently listed database record for the M05N gives a barrel length of 430mm and an empty weight of 4.3kg, figures that match neither the 500mm and 4.45kg standard N1 nor the 406mm and 4.35kg short N1 S on the manufacturer's own spec sheet, and should be corrected to one of those two documented configurations.3,5

A Modern Successor Built for the Export Market Rather Than Serbian Service

Kragujevac'taki Zastava Arms küçük silahlar fabrikası binası

Zastava's own marketing states that the M05N keeps all the characteristics of the M77 while adding a set of upgraded features, positioning the rifle explicitly as an M77 replacement in the export catalog rather than as a new design from scratch.1 The M05 designation plausibly connects to Zastava Arms' 10 March 2005 restructuring as a company, though no source confirms this as the actual naming rationale rather than a coincidence of timing, and that link should be read as circumstantial.7

Zastava markets the wider M05 family, including the N branch, as exported to more than 40 countries, though the company does not publish a country-by-country breakdown, and no independent source lists a confirmed military buyer of the 7.62x51mm N variant by name.1 In June 2025, Serbia suspended all arms and ammunition exports amid controversy over Zastava-made weapons turning up in the Iran-Israel proxy conflict and in the war in Ukraine, a company-wide event affecting every current Zastava export line rather than something specific to the M05N.8

A Caution About a Similarly Named Sibling Rifle

No source documents combat use of the 7.62x51mm M05N specifically. What does have a documented combat record is the M05E, the 7.62x39mm sibling built on the same rail system and receiver generation but chambered for a different, non-NATO cartridge. A 2021 Amnesty International investigation, reviewing more than 400 pieces of verified photo and video content from Burkina Faso and Mali posted between January 2018 and May 2021, identified M05E1 rifles in a weapons cache seized from JNIM fighters during the jihadist insurgency in Burkina Faso in February 2020, along with newer M05E3 rifles matching Serbia's own reported arms transfers to the country.9,10 That fighting sits within the broader war in the Sahel.

That reporting is specific to the 7.62x39mm E variant and its ammunition, not the 7.62x51mm N variant this article covers, and it should not be read as evidence of M05N battlefield use in Burkina Faso or anywhere else. The distinction matters because the two rifles share a name, a receiver generation and a rail system, and reporting on one can easily be mistaken for reporting on the other without careful attention to caliber.

Beyond that documented but caliber-mismatched case, no credible report of any M05N appearing in an active conflict zone turned up in research for this article. That absence is worth stating directly rather than passing over, given how much of the rifle's public documentation otherwise consists of manufacturer marketing material.

Zastava's product line lists five distinct M05N sub-variants, differing mainly in barrel length, stock configuration and fire-control options rather than in the underlying action.3,5 The base M05 N1 and its short-barrel M05 N1 S sibling both retain the folding stock, while the M05 N1 FS swaps that for a fixed stock aimed at buyers who prioritize a more rigid platform over a compact folded length. The M05 N2 is functionally identical to the N1 but adds an ambidextrous safety and fire selector for left-handed shooters, and the M05 N3 pairs the standard-length barrel with the railed, PKM-pattern receiver cover described above.3,5,6

No production totals or unit pricing have been published for any M05N sub-variant, consistent with the broader gap in public data on the modern Zastava Kalashnikov export line.

06 / Operatörler
Operatör Ülkeler1ülke

No independent source names a confirmed military operator of the 7.62x51mm M05N. Zastava's general claim of exporting to more than 40 countries covers the company's product range as a whole, not the N variant specifically, and no defense ministry record, procurement announcement or Small Arms Survey entry naming a specific M05N holder turned up in research.1 Serbia's own armed forces do not field the N variant, using the 7.62x39mm M05E and 5.56mm Zastava M21 instead.2 This mirrors the operator gap already documented for the M77 the M05N replaced in Zastava's catalog, and it should be read as a genuine absence of public data rather than evidence the rifle has no buyers at all.

07 / MASS Score

The M05N and the Zastava M77 it replaces share the same core action, so the comparison that matters is what Zastava changed rather than whether the mechanism differs. The M77 generation used wood or early polymer furniture with, at best, a bolted-on optics rail retrofitted to an unmodified dust cover. The M05N was designed around rails from the start, on both the handguard and, in the N3 sub-variant, the receiver cover itself, and it replaced the M77's underfolding or fixed stocks with the lighter, folding-compatible design shared with Zastava's 5.56mm rifles. Weight moved in the opposite direction from what that modernization might suggest, the standard M05 N1 at 4.45kg is close to the 4.35kg M77 B1 rather than meaningfully lighter, since the added rails offset any savings from the newer furniture.

Set against other modern 7.62x51mm rifles built for the same export and modernization niche, such as the FN SCAR-H or the CZ Bren 2 BR, the M05N is a conservative update. Both of those rivals were designed from a blank sheet with fully modular furniture and, in the SCAR-H's case, a short-stroke piston rather than a Kalashnikov long-stroke system. The M05N instead keeps a proven, half-century-old action and modernizes only what sits around it, betting that buyers already comfortable with AK-pattern maintenance and parts commonality will accept a less modular rifle in exchange for that familiarity and a lower price point.

08 / Sıkça Sorulan Sorular

What caliber is the Zastava M05N chambered in? 7.62x51mm NATO, the export-oriented NATO branch of Zastava's M05 rifle generation. The sibling M05E is chambered in 7.62x39mm for Serbia's own service caliber instead.1,2

How does the Zastava M05N work? It uses a gas-operated, long-stroke piston action with a rotating bolt, the same basic Kalashnikov mechanism inherited from the Zastava M77, scaled to handle 7.62x51mm NATO pressures.1,4

Is the Zastava M05N related to the Zastava M76 sniper rifle? No. The M76 and its successor the Zastava M91 are a separate designated-marksman line in different calibers. The M05N descends from the M70 to M77 assault and battle rifle branch instead.1,4

Is the Zastava M05N still in service? It remains in current production and export, but no independent source confirms a specific named national operator of the 7.62x51mm N variant, and Serbia's own forces use the M05E and Zastava M21 rather than the N branch.1,2

How much does a Zastava M05N cost? No confirmed unit price or contract value has been published for the M05N in any variant.1,3
